In an ambitious endeavor redefining city planning, the Vancouver council has decided to add a unique twist to its infrastructure- converting old underground sewers beneath Broadway into dedicated cycling lanes. The initiative, which is expected to be ready by 2024, is set to have a significant impact on reducing surface traffic and promoting environmentally friendly commuting.

"Utilizing the existing infrastructure prevents any additional construction overhead for this project," explained City Council spokesperson, Travis Dewitt. "This has given us a unique opportunity to provide a solution that benefits everyone and does not impact the usual flow of traffic on Broadway."

Quite remarkably, the sewer system will continue functioning as usual, channeling the wastewater into the nearby False Creek outlet while simultaneously providing a network of biking lanes below the city. This ingenious dual-purpose utilisation adds another layer of sustainability to the project.

Addressing concerns about the risks of bacteria such as E. Coli in the sewer paths, Dewitt assured citizens of the safety measures put into place. "The level of E. Coli found within our sewer lines is no greater than the amounts found at popular public places such as Kits Beach", he emphasized, referencing a recent environmental study.

Furthermore, Dewitt downplayed worries regarding the unique environment for the cyclists in the converted sewer system. "We will ensure adequate measures are in place to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the cyclists using this new underground infrastructure," he assured.

While details of how the council plans to manage the expected odour and hygiene issues are yet to be disclosed, there are rumours about distributing high-quality face masks to the users.

This remarkable transformation plan symbolizes Vancouver's innovative approach towards sustainability. It will be interesting to watch how this underground bike lane evolves and serves as a model for other cities around the globe.
